South Korea Itinerary: 7, 10 and 14 Day Plans with Train Times

Harvested rice fields, a village and wooded hills seen from a moving train window in South Korea

For a first trip, a good South Korea itinerary is Seoul plus one or two other bases, linked by KTX high-speed train. Seven days covers Seoul and Gyeongju. Ten days adds Busan and Jeju. Two weeks lets you slow down and add Jeonju or the east coast.

The Korea Tourism Organization gives the same advice in its trip length guide: stick to two areas for six to ten days, or add Jeju by air. Moving hotels every night burns a surprising amount of time, so each plan below keeps at least two nights per stop.

Travel times between the main stops

These are the times published by regional tourism offices and the airport rail line. Trains vary by service, so check the exact departure on Korail before booking.

Seoul to Busan runs on the main Gyeongbu high-speed line, one of the fastest legs in the country. We don't print a single time here because it varies by train and stop pattern; look it up on Korail's booking channels, listed by the Korea Tourism Organization. Since October 1, 2026, tickets go on sale two months ahead. More on passes and booking is in our South Korea transportation guide.

7 days in South Korea: Seoul and Gyeongju

This is the classic first week. Four nights in Seoul, two in Gyeongju, and a final night back near the airport or in Seoul.

7-day South Korea itinerary
DayBasePlan
1SeoulLand at Incheon, AREX into the city, evening walk along Cheonggyecheon
2SeoulGyeongbokgung (closed Tuesdays), Bukchon Hanok Village before 5 p.m., Insadong
3SeoulChangdeokgung and its Huwon garden (closed Mondays), Myeongdong in the evening
4SeoulFree day: Hongdae, Seongsu or a Han River park; or a day trip to Suwon
5GyeongjuKTX-Eum to Gyeongju (about 2 hours), Daereungwon tombs, Hwangnidan-gil
6GyeongjuBulguksa Temple and Seokguram, then Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond at dusk
7SeoulTrain back to Seoul, last shopping, onward to the airport

Two timing notes. Seoul's palaces close one day a week (Gyeongbokgung on Tuesday, Changdeokgung and Deoksugung on Monday), so swap days 2 and 3 if needed. And Bukchon Hanok Village restricts visitor access in its Red Zone from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m., so go midday. Our Seoul guide covers each stop in detail.

10 day South Korea itinerary: add Busan and Jeju

Ten days lets you see the coast. Fly to Jeju from Busan or Seoul's Gimpo Airport; the Korea Tourism Organization notes Jeju has convenient air connections from many cities.

10-day South Korea itinerary
DaysBaseHighlights
1 to 4SeoulPalaces, Bukchon, markets, one neighborhood day, optional day trip
5 to 6GyeongjuBulguksa, Seokguram, Daereungwon, Wolji Pond at night
7 to 8BusanTrain from Singyeongju (about 47 minutes to Gupo) or bus; Haeundae, Gamcheon Culture Village, Jagalchi Market
9 to 10JejuShort domestic flight; Seongsan Ilchulbong, Olle trail walks, fly home via Seoul

Doing Gyeongju before Busan avoids backtracking. On Jeju, a rental car saves a lot of time because sights are spread around the island; see the Jeju Island guide for routes. If Jeju feels rushed, spend those two days in Busan instead.

2 weeks in Korea: a slower loop

With 14 days you can add Jeonju's hanok village and the east coast without rushing. This loop starts and ends in Seoul.

14-day South Korea itinerary
DaysBaseHighlights
1 to 4SeoulPalaces, neighborhoods, a jjimjilbang night, a day trip
5 to 6JeonjuKTX about 1 hr 40 min; Jeonju Hanok Village, a hanok stay, bibimbap
7 to 8GyeongjuTemples, royal tombs, Yangdong Village
9 to 11BusanBeaches, markets, coastal walks, Haedong Yonggungsa
12 to 13JejuHallasan day hike (check current trail reservation rules), Seongsan, beaches
14SeoulFly to Gimpo, transfer to Incheon or stay a final night

Jeonju to Gyeongju is the one leg on this loop that isn't a straight run from Seoul, so check Korail's journey planner for the best connection before you lock in hotels. In fall, swap Jeonju for two nights near Seoraksan on the east coast to catch the foliage; timing is in our best time to visit South Korea guide.

Is the Korail Pass worth it for these routes?

Sometimes. As of October 2026, the Korail Pass is sold only as a flexible pass: you pick 2, 3, 4 or 5 travel days within 10 days, according to the Korea Tourism Organization. Adult prices listed in 2026 are ₩131,000 for 2 days (about $98 at October 2026 rates), ₩186,000 for 3 days (about $140), ₩234,000 for 4 days (about $176) and ₩275,000 for 5 days (about $207). Check Let's Korail for the current price before you buy.

The pass is for foreigners only and does not cover subways or temporary tourist trains. It never covered SRT trains from Suseo; those became KTX on September 1, 2026, so confirm coverage before counting on them. On the 7-day plan you only take two long train rides, so individual tickets will usually win. The 14-day loop, with four or five long legs, is where a pass can pay off. Price both before buying.

Which plan fits your trip?

First-timers with one week should take the Seoul and Gyeongju plan as written. It mixes the big city with Korea's best-preserved ancient capital and needs only two long train rides.

Beach and food travelers should lean toward the 10-day plan and give Busan the extra night. Hikers should pick the 14-day loop in fall and swap in Seoraksan or a longer Jeju stay. Families often do better with fewer bases: Seoul for five nights, then Busan for four, with day trips from each.

Whatever you pick, put your money where your time goes. Lodging is the biggest cost after flights, and the South Korea trip cost guide shows daily budgets for each style of travel.

How to adjust any South Korea travel itinerary

  • Add a buffer day in typhoon season (June to October) if you're taking ferries or flying to Jeju.
  • Avoid long-distance travel on Seollal and Chuseok. In 2027 they fall on February 6 to 9 and September 14 to 16.
  • Keep luggage light. You'll be hauling bags through stations and up guesthouse stairs.
  • Book Seoul accommodation near an AREX or Line 2 stop to make the airport and cross-town trips easier. Our where to stay guide compares neighborhoods.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in South Korea?

Seven days covers Seoul and one other region comfortably. Ten days lets you add Busan or Jeju, and two weeks allows a relaxed loop of four or five bases.

What is a good 7 day South Korea itinerary?

Spend four nights in Seoul for palaces, Bukchon and neighborhoods, then take the KTX-Eum to Gyeongju (about two hours) for two nights of temples and royal tombs before heading back.

Should I visit Busan or Jeju on a short trip?

Busan is easier because you can reach it by train and combine it with Gyeongju. Jeju needs a flight and works best with a rental car, so give it at least two full days.

How long is the train from Seoul to Gyeongju?

Regional tourism guides list about 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 8 minutes from Seoul to Gyeongju Station on the KTX-Eum. Check Korail for the exact train.

Do I need a Korail Pass for my itinerary?

Only if you take four or more long train rides in the pass window. For a one-week Seoul and Gyeongju trip, single tickets are usually cheaper.
